    bovine

It says something about our assumption that we are a superior species and about our true feelings concerning the animal kingdom that words derived from the names of animals and insects are—when applied to humans—hardly ever flattering. Waspish. Mousy. The list goes on. Foxy, and perhaps owlish, are, I suppose, among the few exceptions. Unfortunately, the temptation to use such words—unfair to humans and animals alike—remains strong because they telegraph so much information, so efficiently. When we hear that someone is bovine, or ferretlike, we know precisely what is meant.
    Francine Prose
