  • (1909–81), US novelist; born Nelson Ahlgren Abraham. He drew on his childhood experiences in the slums of Chicago for his vivid, realistic novels of social protest, such as Somebody in Boots (1935). Other notable works: The Man with the Golden Arm (1949) and Walk on the Wild Side (1956).
