( 1763–1844), French soldier; full name Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte. One of Napoleon’s marshals, he was adopted by Charles XIII of Sweden in 1810 and became king of Sweden as Charles XIV 1818–44, thus founding Sweden’s present royal house.
