( 1935–98), US entertainer and politician; born Salvatore Bono. Famed as half of the singing duo Sonny and Cher 1964–74, he later became a Republican politician. He was elected mayor of Palm Springs, California, in 1988 and served in the US House of Representatives 1995–98. He died in a skiing accident.
