( 1930–99), US astronaut 1962–73; born Charles Conrad, Jr.. He commanded the Apollo 12 lunar mission in 1969, becoming the third man to set foot on the Moon. He was one of a few astronauts who flew four space missions (Gemini V, 1965; Gemini XI, 1966; Apollo 12; and Skylab 2, 1973).
