( 1786–1836), US frontiersman, soldier, and politician; full name David Crockett. While a member of the House of Representatives 1827–35, he cultivated the image of a rough backwoods legislator. When he left politics, he returned to the frontier, where he fought for the cause of Texan independence. He was killed at the siege of the Alamo.
