( 1890–1969), US general and 34th president of the US 1953–61; nicknamed Ike. A Kansas Republican, he was one of the most celebrated US military leaders before entering politics. In World War II, he was Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in western Europe 1943–45. As president, he adopted a hard line toward communism in both his domestic and foreign policy.
