( 1925-), Japanese physicist. He investigated and pioneered the development of quantum-mechanical tunneling of electrons in semiconductor devices. He designed the tunnel diode. He shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics with Ivar Giaever (1929-) and Brian D. Josephson (1940-). See tunnel diode.
