  • (1816–99), US Supreme Court associate justice 1863–97. Appointed to the Court by President Lincoln, he was a conservative. His brother David Dudley Field (1805–94) was noted for his expertise in law codification; another brother Cyrus West Field (1819–92) was known for his part in the laying of the undersea cable between the US and Europe 1857–66.
