( 1917–96), US jazz singer; full name Ella Jane Fitzgerald. Known for her distinctive style of scat singing, she appeared with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. From the mid 1950s, she made a series of recordings of songs by George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
