( 1913–87), US jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and bandleader; full name Woodrow Charles Herman. From 1936 he led a series of big bands called his "Herds." “Ebony Concerto” was written for him by Stravinsky and first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1946.
