A river in northern India that rises in the Himalayas and flows more than 850 miles (1,370 km) in a large arc south and southeast, through Delhi, before joining the Ganges River below Allahabad. Its source (Yamunotri River) and its confluence with the Ganges River are both Hindu holy places. Hindi name Yamuna.
