( 1886–1972), US biochemist. He isolated crystalline thyroxine from the thyroid gland, and he also discovered cortisone. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (1950), shared with Philip S. Hench ( 1896–1965) and Tadeus Reichstein ( 1897–1996).
