( 1920–75), Bangladeshi statesman; first prime minister of independent Bangladesh 1972–75 and president 1975; known as Sheikh Mujib. After failing to establish parliamentary democracy as prime minister, he assumed dictatorial powers in 1975. He and his family were assassinated in a military coup.
