Rwanda

Syllabification: Rwan·da
Pronunciation: /ro͝oˈändə

/

Definition of Rwanda in English:

A landlocked country in central Africa, north of Burundi and south of Uganda; population 10,746,300 (est. 2009); capital, Kigali; languages, Rwanda (a Bantu language) and French (both official). Official name Rwandese Republic.

Inhabited largely by Hutu and Tutsi peoples, the area was claimed by Germany from 1890 and after World War I became part of a Belgian trust territory. Rwanda became independent as a republic in 1962, shortly after the violent overthrow of the Tutsi monarchy by the majority Hutu people. In 1994, over 500,000 people, largely Tutsis, were slaughtered by predominantly Hutu supporters of the government, and more than a million fled as refugees into the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and neighboring countries. The Tutsi-dominated Rwandan Patriotic Front took power as the new government. Elections were held in 2003, but wars in neighboring countries and a Hutu insurgency cause continuing instability
