( 1915–2012), Israeli statesman, born in Poland; prime minister 1983–84 and 1986–92; Polish name Yitzhak Jazernicki. Under his leadership, Israel did not retaliate when attacked by Iraqi missiles during the Gulf War and possibly averted an escalation of the conflict.
