  • (1909–93) US writer, teacher, and environmentalist; full name Wallace Earle Stegner. He taught at Stanford University 1945–71 and served on the National Parks Advisory Board 1962–66. His novels include The Big Rock Candy Mountain (1943), The Spectator Bird (1976), Recapitulation (1979), and Crossing to Safety (1987).
