( 1768–1813) Shawnee Indian chief; also Tecumtha. His plan to organize a military confederacy of tribes to resist US encroachment was thwarted by the defeat of his brother, Tenskwatawa ( c.1768–1834) (also called the Prophet), at Tippecanoe 1811. An ally of the British in the War of 1812, Tecumseh fought and died in Ontario at the Battle of the Thames.
