( 1919–98), US politician; full name George Corley Wallace. A four-term governor of Alabama, he gained national attention in the early 1960s when he defied civil rights legislation that outlawed segregation in public schools. While campaigning for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, he was shot and paralyzed by would-be assassin Arthur Bremer ( 1950-).
