( 1769–1852), British soldier and statesman; prime minister 1828–30 and 1834; born Arthur Wellesley; known as the Iron Duke. He served as commander of the British forces against Napoleon 1808–14 and defeated him at the Battle of Waterloo 1815, which ended the Napoleonic Wars.
