A landlocked country in western South America; population 9,775,200 (est. 2009); capital, La Paz; legal capital and seat of the judiciary, Sucre; languages, Spanish (official), Aymara, and Quechua.

After the defeat of the Incas, Bolivia became part of Spain’s empire in the Americas. Freed from Spanish rule in 1825, it has suffered continually from political instability.


Named after Simón Bolívar, who liberated the country from Spanish rule.
