Burnside, Ambrose

Pronunciation: /ˈbərnˌsīd/
(1824–81), US army officer; full name Ambrose Everett Burnside. He was appointed General of the Army of the Potomac in 1862, but his incompetence at the Battle of Fredericksburg that same year led to his transfer to the Ohio valley.
