(1897–1985), US virologist. With Frederick C. Robbins (1916–2003) and Thomas H. Weller (1915–2008), he devised a method of growing viruses in tissue cultures, which led to the development of vaccines against mumps, polio, and measles. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (1954), shared with Robbins and Weller.
