Gogol, Nikolai

Pronunciation: /ˈɡōɡəl/
(1809–52), Russian novelist, playwright, and short-story writer; born in Ukraine; full name Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol. His writings are satirical and often explore themes of fantasy and the supernatural. Notable works: The Government Inspector (1836), Notes of a Madman (1835), and Dead Souls (1842).
