Guatemala City

The capital of Guatemala; population 1,090,000 (est. 2009). At an altitude of 4,920 feet (1,500 m) in the central highlands, it was founded in 1776 to replace the former capital, Antigua Guatemala, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1773.
