Definition of hedge-laying in English:
The process of making or maintaining a hedge by weaving partly cut branches through the upright stems of a row of shrubs.
- The poet was asked to write a series of 12 poems, which resonate with sense of place and reflect the farming calendar, such as hay-making, harvest, hedge-laying and lambing.
- Today hedge-laying and hurdle-weaving are rarely seen on farms.
- Interviewed by the Guardian in 1991, he attributed his limp to ‘an old hedge-laying wound’; it was in fact a skiing injury.
