His experiences in the US Army Air Force during World War II inspired his best-known novel Catch-22 (1961), an absurd black comedy that satirized war and was the source of the expression “catch-22.” He also wrote Something Happened (1974), God Knows (1984), Picture This (1988), and Closing Time (1994).
