Hellman, Lillian

Pronunciation: /ˈhelmən/
(1907–84), US playwright; full name Lillian Florence Hellman. Her plays, such as The Children’s Hour (1934), The Little Foxes (1939), and Watch on the Rhine (1941), often reflected her socialist and feminist concerns. She lived with writer Dashiell Hammett, and both were blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
