The capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), a port on the Congo River, in the southwestern part of the country; population 7,273,900 (est. 2004). Founded in 1881 by explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley, it became capital of the Republic of Zaire in 1960. Former name (until 1966) Léopoldville.
