Maryland

A state in the eastern US that surrounds Chesapeake Bay, on the Atlantic coast; population 5,633,597 (est. 2008); capital, Annapolis; statehood, Apr. 28, 1788 (7). Colonized by England in the 1600s, it was one of the original thirteen states.

Origin

Named after Queen Henrietta Maria (1609–69), wife of Charles I.
