A light porous (especially brown) volcanic rock formed of small grains of sand, cinders, etc.
- Built of uniformly gray, granular volcanic tufa, or peperino, the courtyard was completed by 1579, as recorded in the building documents.
- They played up the contrast between plastered surfaces and the peperino stone in the footings, projecting windowsills, and coping.
- Peperino tuff is best known as building stone heavily utilized by the ancient Romans.
17th century: Italian, from pepere 'pepper' on account of its grainy appearance.
