Pompadour, Marquise de

Pronunciation: /ˈpämpəˌdôr/ /-ˌdo͝or/ /pôNpäˈdo͞or/
(1721–64), French noblewoman; known as Madame de Pompadour; born Jeanne Antoinette Poisson. In 1744, she became the mistress of Louis XV, gaining considerable influence at court.
