(1902–94), British philosopher; born in Austria. In The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1934) he argued that scientific hypotheses can never be finally confirmed as true, but are tested by attempts to falsify them. He also wrote The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945), a critique of all totalitarian systems.
