Rothko, Mark

Pronunciation: /ˈräTHkō/
(1903–70), US painter, born in Latvia; born Marcus Rothkovich. A leading figure in color-field painting, he painted hazy and seemingly floating rectangles of color. His series of nine paintings for the Seagram Building in New York City include Black on Maroon (1958).
