San Martín, José de

Pronunciation: /ˌsan märˈtēn/
(1778–1850), Argentine soldier and statesman. After assisting in the liberation of Argentina from Spanish rule 1812–13, he went on to aid in the liberation of Chile 1817–18 and of Peru 1820–24.
