(In certain sporozoan protozoans) a cell that divides by schizogony to form daughter cells.
- Essentially, type I schizonts are involved in asexual reproduction, whereas type II schizonts are involved in sexual reproduction.
- Merozoites invade erythrocytes, differentiate into trophozoites, and divide to become blood schizonts.
