(Of a file) having grooves cut in one direction only, not crossing each other.
- A properly equipped start-up shop should have the necessary vise, grinder, drill press, 50 assorted files with the 6' and 8' single-cut mill files the most used, a vertical mill and at least a 10' lathe.
- To sharpen larger garden tools such as shears, loppers, shovels, spades, and hoes, use fine- and medium-grit single-cut mill bastard files instead of a whetstone.
