(1882–1971), Russian composer, resident of the US from 1939; full name Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky. His ballets The Firebird (1910) and The Rite of Spring (1913) shocked Paris audiences with their irregular rhythms and frequent dissonances. He later developed a neoclassical style typified by the opera The Rake’s Progress (1948–51) and experimented with serialism in Threni (1958).
