Thackeray, William Makepeace

Pronunciation: /ˈTHak(ə)rē/ /ˈTHakəˌrā/
(1811–63), British novelist, born in India. He established his reputation with Vanity Fair (1847–48), a satire of the upper middle class of early 19th-century society. Other novels included The History of Henry Esmond (1852).
