Verne, Jules

Pronunciation: /vərn/
(1828–1905), French novelist. One of the first writers of science fiction, he often anticipated later scientific and technological developments, such as in Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1870). Other novels include Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).
