    disabled
Disabled is the standard term for people who have physical or mental disabilities. In the past, it was acceptable to use terms such as handicapped or crippled but these may now cause offence and should be avoided. More recently, expressions such as physically challenged or differently abled have been coined as synonyms for disabled in a conscious attempt to eradicate any negative perception or stigma that may be felt to be attached to the older terms: these may be appropriate in certain situations but they are best avoided in formal writing. Similarly, disability should be used rather than words such as handicap, incapacity, or impairment
