  • momentary or momentous?Momentary and momentous are both derived from moment, but in different senses. Momentary is related to moment in the sense ‘a very brief time’, and means ‘lasting only for a very short time’ ( after a momentary hesitation she nodded). Momentous, derived from moment in the sense of ‘importance’, means ‘of great importance or significance’, and applies particularly to events with profound implications for future developments ( a decade of momentous political change).
