1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley ( 1867–1947), British Conservative statesman, Prime Minister 1923-4, 1924-9, and 1935-7. Despite the German occupation of the Rhineland and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (both 1936), Baldwin opposed demands for rearmament, believing that the public would not support it.
