The capital of Colombia, situated in the eastern Andes at about 2,610 m (8,560 ft); population 6,778,691 (2005). It was founded by the Spanish in 1538 on the site of a pre-Columbian centre of the Chibcha culture. Official name Santa Fé de Bogotá.
