( 1870–1922), English-born Irish writer and political activist, shot for his involvement in the Irish civil war; full name Robert Erskine Childers. Notable works: The Riddle of the Sands (novel, 1903). His son Erskine Hamilton Childers ( 1905–74) was President of Ireland 1973-4.
