( 1926–91), American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader; full name Miles Dewey Davis. In the 1950s he played and recorded arrangements in a new style which became known as ‘cool’ jazz, heard on albums such as Kind of Blue (1959). In the 1960s he pioneered the fusion of jazz and rock.
