A city in Belgium, capital of the province of East Flanders; population 237,250 (2008). Founded in the 10th century, it became the capital of the medieval principality of Flanders. It was formerly known in English as Gaunt (surviving in names, e.g. John of Gaunt). French name Gand, Flemish name Gent.
