( 1847–1934), German Field Marshal and statesman, President of the Weimar Republic 1925–34; full name Paul Ludwig von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg. Elected President in 1925 and re-elected in 1932, he reluctantly appointed Hitler as Chancellor in 1933.
