  • (1905–76), American industrialist, film producer, and aviator; full name Howard Robard Hughes. He made his fortune through the Hughes Tool Company, made his debut as a film director in 1926, and from 1935 to 1938 broke many world aviation records. For the last twenty-five years of his life he lived as a recluse.
