( 1923–2014), Polish general and statesman, Prime Minister 1981-5, head of state 1985-9, and President 1989–90. He responded to the rise of Solidarity by imposing martial law and banning trade union operation, but following the victory of Solidarity in the 1989 elections he supervised Poland’s transition to a democracy.
